Zopiclone is a drug that is used for the treatment of insomnia and other sleeping disorders. It reduces the amount of time needed to get to sleep and eliminates nocturnal awakenings throughout the night. It is also an effective sedative with muscle-relaxing properties. Zopiclone should ideally only be used short term to avoid issues with dependence or withdrawal symptoms – ideally for 4 weeks or less. Zopiclone is sold under various different brand names which include Zimovane, Datolan and Imovane.
Under certain circumstances, caution should be taken before taking zopiclone to treat insomnia. Also, under some circumstances, zopiclone may not be suitable for you at all. You are advised to inform your doctor if:
- suffering from liver or kidney problems
- you suffer from myasthenia gravis (this is a nerve disorder causing muscle weakness)
- you have abused alcohol or drugs in the past
- suffering from sleep apnea
- you have a personality disorder
- suffering from depression
- sensitive or allergic to any ingredient contained in zopiclone
- experiencing breathing problems
- planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding
If you are concerned about any other condition you may be experiencing, it is always advisable to consult your doctor to be sure that taking zopiclone is safe for you.
The usual adult dosage is one 7.5 mg Zopiclone tablet swallowed whole, without chewing, before bedtime with a drink of water. Specific information regarding the correct dose to suit your circumstances can be found on the instructions contained in the packaging. These instructions should be followed at all times to make sure you obtain safe and effective results. Generally speaking, zopiclone should be taken just before you normally require sleep but care should be taken to make sure you have adequate time for sleep – in the case of zopiclone you are recommended to allocate at least 7 hours for sleeping to avoid feeling drowsy the following day. Only take zopiclone if it has been recommended for your use by a doctor. Never share this medication with any third party or take if recommended by another person who is not a doctor. Never take more than the recommended dosage under any circumstances.
This medication, like many other medications, does come with its share of side effects. For instance, the drug has been linked to some forms of memory loss and confusion if taken at the wrong time of day. This, however, should not be a problem if taken as directed, i.e. just before sleep is required. Common side effects arising from the use of zopiclone may include dizziness and/or drowsiness (especially for older people), changes in taste, a dry mouth and feeling tired during the day, particularly at the start of treatment. Less common side effects may include anxiety, nausea, headaches, changes in libido, confusion, development of a rash and memory problems. Even though this medicine is taken before bedtime, occasionally some users feel inactive and drowsy the following day. It is important that you accurately gauge your reaction to zopiclone before you operate machinery, drive or do anything that could pose danger if you are feeling disoriented. It must be stressed that the vast majority of people only experience mild side effects. More serious side effects are rarely encountered when following the correct usage guidelines.
